The government set itself the goal in the Hurdal platform that all feed for Norwegian animals and fish must be 100 per cent sustainable by 2030. Then we have to think short-term, new and sustainable, and utilize the resources we already have available here at home.

Utilizing the whole salmon and taking care of more of it here at home in Norway is an important contribution to such sustainable feed production in the farming industry. Slaughtering and off-cuts from salmon are not waste, they are valuable residual raw material that can enter the food chain again as high-quality marine feed ingredients that the salmon can both eat and grow extra well on.

Ingrid Sandbakken and Kathrine Kjos Five are food grantees at Nutrimar and were recently interviewed by Gemini NTNU about the important discovery that gives the green light for salmon hydrolyzate as a protein source in salmon feed. With this, the raw material we process from the salmon itself can form a sustainable, circular and profitable value chain in aquaculture going forward.

Salmon hydrolyzate is therefore safe to use as a protein source and feed ingredient for farmed salmon, and also improves nutrient absorption, growth and health of the fish. The research is published on ScienceDirect.com:
