Nutrimar AS was founded with the business idea of creating value out of waste products from the salmon industry. Since then, the company has nurtured certain skills, including hydrolysis and in general, the processing of fresh raw materials, which has enabled the company to position itself as an innovative and sustainable enterprise for the future. The business started back in 2007 with the company investing in a processing plant for salmon by-products, literally next door to SalMar's salmon slaughter-plant at Nordskaget / Frøya. Nutrimar has continually had this activity as one of its areas of business, and through this work created increased employment in the local community and augmented the value of the raw material that was once considered waste. Taking advantage of and creating value out of under-utilised raw materials are still central in the company's vision and aims. This is in line with the Norwegian and European political agenda, which focuses on the circular economy, aiming for greater resource efficiency and excellent utilisation of raw materials.

Nutrimar has been assigned 2 R & D salmon licences. These licences will be utilised scientifically in the research and development of feed ingredients. Based on our raw material fundament, we will initially be developing new feed compositions that will be tested on salmon at different stages of the salmon's lifecycle.

Nutrimar processes all the raw material while still fresh and without the use of preservatives, which enable the company to produce oils, protein hydrolysate and flour that customers use as high-quality nutritional products for the likes of farmed species and pets. The products from the macroalgae are also utilised later in the value chain as ingredients for human consumption and pharmacy. Nutrimar raises innovation and research to the top of the agenda and continuously invests in product development. In collaboration with NTNU, the company has two salmon research licences, permitting the parties to carry out feeding experiments with Nutrimar's ingredients, aiming to document positive effects from the products in feed formulas for salmon.
